Machines that resemble humans scramble along the lines of light that are reduced to shadows. The rugged, clunky movement of the deformed onearmed robot out of symmetry raises the illusion of ‘human familiarity’ to us through the process of overlapping, distorting and composing shadows. Robots that operate as automated stage equipment and characters evoke an unstable future, such as the restraint of a machine not far from the future, but in reality they are constrained machines in human control. Designed with the memory of colleagues in the 90s club scene and the alienated people in the streets, these robots dance and sing to each other in limited gestures. Developed with five members of the creative team, this play explores the possibilities of a new genre of robotic mechanical theater.

그림자로 환원되는 빛의 시선을 따라 인간을 닮은 기계들이 꿈틀거린다. 대칭을 벗어난 기형적 외팔이 로봇의 거칠고 투박한 움직임은 그림자의 중첩, 왜곡, 합성 등의 과정을 거쳐 우리에게 ‘인간적 익숙함’이란 착시적 환상을 불러일으킨다. 자동화된 무대장치이자 등장인물들로 작동하는 로봇들은 멀지 않은 미래의 기계의 구속과 같은 불안한 미래를 환기시키지만 실은 인간의 제어영역 안에 있는 구속된 기계들이다. 90년대 클럽씬의 동료들과의 기억과 거리의 소외된 사람들을 모티브로 제작된 이 로봇들은 제한된 몸짓 안에서 서로를 비추며 춤추고, 노래한다. 5인의 크리에이티브팀과 함께 제작된 이 창작극은 로봇을 이용한 메카니컬 시어터(Robotic Mechanical Theater)라는 새로운 장르를 개척하고 그 가능성을 탐구한다.

The main characters of (August 26-28, Daehakro Theater QuadQUAD) invited to the 2022 Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture Foundation Daehakro Theater QuadQUAD opening festival are performer-robot troupe members. They are a theatrical group that is adept at both tragedies and plays with extremely restrained emotional expression. At the same time, they are also seen as performers presenting chords orchestrated with a cosmic theme. Also, they are a dance company that showcases cutting-edge choreography, and it feels like a wandering troupe or a ghost troupe floating aimlessly in a certain evening in the vast universe. It is not easy to define their performances as one genre. This is because it goes far beyond the form of Robotic Mechanical Theater and is complex, intersectional, and integrated. Their performance seems to be outside the genre, but it seems to form a unique genre in itself. Before the performance starts, from the house opening, the audience can see the performer-robot troupe members. The appearance of them standing still is unfamiliar. Both those who have seen their movements before and those who have never seen them. This is also because most of the devices surrounding us in real life aim for sleekness and sophistication.

2022년 서울문화재단 대학로극장 쿼드QUAD 개관 페스티벌 초청작 《싸구려 인조인간의 노랫말 2 (로보트 야상곡)》(8월 26~28일, 대학로극장 쿼드QUAD)의 주인공은 퍼포머로봇 극단원들이다. 이들은 극히 절제된 정서 표현만으로도 비극과 희곡 모두에 능수능란한 연극집단이다. 동시에 우주적 테마로 오케스트레이션된 화음을 선보이는 연주자들로 보이기도 한다. 또한 이들은 첨단의 안무를 선보이는 댄스컴퍼니이며 광대무량한 우주의 어느 가녁을 정처 없이 부유하는 유랑극단이자 유령극단처럼 느껴지기도 한다. 이들의 퍼포먼스를 하나의 장르로 규정하기는 쉽지 않다. 로보틱 메카니컬 씨어터(Robotic Mechanical Theater)라는 형식을 훌쩍 넘어 복합적이면서도 교차적이고 통합적이기 때문이다. 이들의 퍼포먼스는 탈장르적인 것으로 보이면서도 그 자체로 하나의 고유한 장르를 이루고 있는 듯하다. 공연이 시작하기 전, 하우스 오픈 때부터 관객들은 퍼포머-로봇 극단원들을 볼 수 있다. 멈춰 있는 그들 모습은 낯설다. 일전에 그들의 움직임을 본 적 있는 이들에게도, 한 번도 본 적 없는 이들에게도 모두 말이다. 이는 실생활에서 우리 주변을 둘러싼 기기 대부분이 매끈함과 세련됨을 지향하고 있기 때문이기도 하다. 그러나 이 공연의 퍼포머로봇은 그렇지 않다. 외양에서 풍기는 인상부터 거칠고 불안정하며 아날로그적이다. 작동할 때의 움직임과 사운드 또한 그러하다. 첫 인상과 달리 이 퍼포머-로봇들이 따뜻하고 인간적으로 느껴지는 것은 어느 시점부터인가. 퍼포머-로봇이라는 대상을 바라보는 작가적 시선의 고유함에서 만들어지는 묘한 감동은 언제부터 관객들 안에서도 움트는가.

At the curtain call, human staff and performer-robot all come together to greet the audience. After the performance, the audience exits and can see the remaining performer-robot troupe members on the stage. Exposed in a non-working state, they are not much different from the appearances we saw when entering the theater with the house open. However, upon leaving the theater, they all look different than in the first scene. Even the stage equipment such as screens, fog machines, and mirror balls, as well as the lighting around them, look the same. This is because passed through the theater here as a wonderful new world and an old future, both unfamiliar and familiar. In a very ‘dramatic way’, this ‘serious night’ finally reaches ‘the end of this heart’.

커튼콜에서는 인간 스텝들과 퍼포머-로봇이 모두 함께 나와 관객들과 인사를 나눈다. 공연이 끝나고 난 뒤, 관객들은 퇴장하며 무대 위에 남은 퍼포머-로봇 극단원들을 볼 수 있다. 작동을 멈춘 채 노출되어 있는 그들은 하우스 오픈 상태에서 극장에 들어오며 봤던 모습과 크게 다르지 않다. 그러나 극장을 나서는 시점에 그들 모두는 첫 장면에서와 달라 보인다. 심지어 그들 주변의 조명기를 비롯하여 스크린, 포그머신, 미러볼과 같은 무대 장비들마저도 그러해 보인다. 낯설면서도 익숙한, 멋진 신세계이자 오래된 미래로서 <싸구려 인조인간의 노래2(로보트 야상곡)>이 이곳 극장을 관통해 지나갔기 때문이다. 너무나 ‘극적인 방식’으로 이 ‘심각한 밤’은 기어코 ‘이 맘의 끝에’가 닿는다.
